இந்நுலில் உள்ள ஒவ்வொரு உணவு குறிப்பும் கடலோர சூழலோடு பிண்ணிபிணைந்து வாழும் உழைக்கும் மக்கள் பகிர்ந்துக்கொண்டது.  இவர்களில் பெரும்பான்மையினர் பரந்த சோழமண்டல கடற்கரையின் கடல், ஆறுகள் மற்றும் கால்வாய்களில் மீன்பிடிக்கும் மீனவர்கள்.  இந்த  நூலின் முதன்மைப் பங்களிப்பாளர்களான உள்ள பெண்கள், பெரும்பாலும் மீன் விற்பனையாளர்கள் ஆவர். அவர்கள் சந்தைகளில் மீன் ஏலம் எடுத்து உளளூர் சந்தைகளில் மீன் விற்பவர்கள். அவர்களை அடுத்த பங்களிப்பை செய்தவர்கள் கடலோரப் பகுதிகளில்  உணவுக் கடைகளை நடத்தும் பெண்கள். இவர்கள் நடத்தும்  தெருவோர உணவகங்களில் கடல் உணவுகளை உழைக்கும் மக்களுக்கு மலிவு விலையில் வழங்குகிறார்கள். அதேபோல பர்மாவிலிருந்து போருக்கு பின் இந்தியா திரும்பி கடற்கரையில் குடியேறிய மக்கள் என கடகடலோரத்தோடு வாழ்வை அமைத்துக்கொண்ட மக்களின் உணவுப் பண்பாட்டினையும் இந்நூலில்  ஆவணப்படுத்தியுள்ளோம்.

Every recipe in the book is shared by a coastal inhabitant, someone whose life and work is intimately connected to the littoral. These are predominantly fishers, who use a variety of fishing craft and gear to practise artisanal fishing in the sea, rivers and canals of Chennai and the wider Coromandel Coast. The women, who are the primary contributors to this book, are predominantly fish vendors, who purchase their wares in traditional auctions and sell them at the many fish markets on this coastline. Then there are those who run the now famed ‘akka kadais’, seaside food stalls that serve freshly cooked seafood meals at affordable rates to the working people of the region.

But, these categories do not encompass the diversity of life on the coast, nor do they cover even the multifaceted lives of those who do fit into the categories. For example, there are fishers who work in office or factory jobs during the week, and practise fishing or run seafood businesses in the weekend. Or people who’ve settled on the coast when they returned to India from erstwhile Burma in the post-war years. We’ll let the book show rather than tell it all here.
