Coromandel Coast. Chennai. Pondicherry. These are names that evoke long illustrious histories of empire and development; and more recently of social upheaval and climate vulnerability. However, these broad strokes seldom reveal stories of the people who actually make up the coast through their work and everyday lives. They tell us even lesser about the ecology that makes up this coast – the interplay of different types of waters and lands, the various non-human beings that enrich it, and the way these have been changing over the years. This is the environment that’s the basis for all the delicious seafood this book presents.

This environment is also entwined with the social geographies of caste that have determined which parts of the coast would have sandy beaches and which might need rocky groynes, and which might even be submerged in the process of so-called development. It has also determined whose knowledge, aesthetics and tastes shall be valued and not. This book is but an attempt at mapping those ecologies, skills and people that have been eroded or altogether submerged in dominant representations as well.
